Needles: 4mm circular needle.
Set of 4 mm dpns for shaping hat decreases

Yarn: 50-100 gm 8 ply (DK).  I used just over 50 gm  for an average size hat for a woman.  I used just over half 100gm ball of Lincraft Cosy Wool.

Pattern:  pattern repeat of three stitches

Row 1:*YO, knit 2 tog, knit 1. repeat from * to end of row.
Rows 2,3,4, Knit

Repeat these four rows for length required.

Hat: For women’s size cast on 87 stitches with circular needle.  Pattern repeat is three stitches, so adjust up or down in multiples of 3. Join stitches to make a circle and be careful to avoid twisting the stitches.

Knit 8 rows in garter stitch for rolled effect.

Purl next row for an end to roll.

Place marker for beginning of round.

Work in pattern for as many repeats as required.

Continue knitting every row till length required.  Hat in picture is 6” from the bottom of the rolled edge, not the very first cast on edge. Increase 1 stitch at beginning of round for numbers for shaping.  (for different sizes, the total number of stitches before shaping needs to be divisible by 8.)

Knit stitches off onto the dpns and begin shaping.
Row 1:*Knit 6, knit 2tog.  Repeat from * till end of row.
Row 2: Knit
Row 3: *Knit 5, knit 2 tog.  Repeat from *till end.
Row 4: Knit.
Continue in this manner, until you have knitted down to knit 1, knit 2 tog.
Next row: knit 2 together all around.  Repeat this row once.

If you do not want the I-cord tail, break yarn here, thread through remaining stitches, pull up tightly and fasten off.

For I-cord tail, knit 2 tog till there are 4 stitches left. Place these 4 stitches on one dpn. Knit. Slide the stitches to the end of the needle, bring yarn around from the back firmly and repeat till cord is length required.  Cast off and weave ends in.  Tie tail in knot and slide down flat on top of hat.
